A Big Boy Bed

Well, we reached another parenting milestone last night.  We put Isaiah’s crib away and got him a twin size bed!  We bought Thomas the Tank Engine sheets and comforter for him to sweeten the deal.  I think he was a little sad, or at least concerned, to see his crib taken down, so I was glad we had the Thomas stuff to make the new bed exciting.  (The picture isn’t his room, it’s just the company’s picture of the bedding.)

I had been a little hesitant to get him a big-boy bed already, because I knew we’d have a hard time keeping him in it.  But we also don’t want him to feel like he is losing his crib because of the baby, so we decided to get his bed a little early and get him used to it.

My hesitation was well merited!  We waited until he was extra tired to pop Isaiah into bed, read him lots of bedtime stories to get him relaxed, and picked up all his toys so he wouldn’t be tempted to play.  He laid down all sweet and was quiet for a few minutes, but then we heard the click of the door handle and guess who came walking out!  We had to lay him down quite a few times and give him a “you’re a big boy now” pep talk.  Eventually, he fell asleep on his own.

I did like the new sleeping arrangements when it came to this morning.  Usually he wakes up crying and calling for me, which is a disruptive way to start your morning (my chief complaint about my young child is that he is very demanding!).  Today, he played quietly in his room for a while and eventually he knocked on his door and called my name and I told him he could come out.  It was so peaceful!

Isaiah’s imagination is really growing!  The other morning, he brought a stuffed puppy into the living room when he was going to watch a movie, and sat the puppy up in a chair, just so, to watch with him.  Then he brought the puppy over by the DVD’s so it could pick out the movie.  Later that day, he tried to put a stuffed animal (that is as big as he is) up on the changing table, and asked me to put a diaper on it!  It’s cute to see him giving his stuffed friends personality.
